Tanzania is a large country just south of Kenya, green and peaceful. Its 40 million people (and therefore 20 million children!) are spread over thousands of kilometers, but most specialized children’s services are located in the capital, Dar-es-Salaam, on the coast.  We plan to start a Spina bifida and hydrocephalus program in partnership with the International Federation for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus (IF) at the twin institutions of Arusha Lutheran Medical Center (ALMC) and Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center (KCMC) in northern Tanzania. At the end of 2011 our third pediatric surgery trainee Catherine Mung’ong’o graduates, and we desire to assist her to start a full pediatric surgery program. Stay tuned!
