Madagascar is the remote island in the Indian Ocean off Africa’s east coast, with a population of 20 million, and only one pediatric surgeon.  Dr. Heuric Rakotomalala has finished his training with us and returned to his country and make a difference.  Several visits to Madagascar helped us identify Mahajanga, a city in the north of the island, as a desirable site and the Antanimalandy Lutheran Hospital as our partner. In April 2011 we sent Dr. Heuric to start working at this hospital to provide pediatric surgical care. In a later phase, we hope to design and build a small pediatric surgical unit within the hospital compound and to train other health care professionals to join Dr. Heuric in this adventure.
